Online doesn’t mean out of touch!

At VCS, students have the opportunity to participate in many face-to-face learning and social activities:

COSI Learning Center in Columbus

The Learning Center serves elementary, junior high and high school students three days a week, three hours each day. The Learning Center is staffed with highly qualified teachers and is designed to increase student achievement. Students experience a safe and drug-free environment.

In addition to tutoring services, the Learning Center works with students to help them organize time and improve study skills and test-taking skills. Science enrichment activities are provided as well as field trips, career exploration and college preparation. For more information on the COSI Learning Center, contact teresa.walton@vcslearn.org.

Dayton Success Site in Dayton

The Learning Center serves elementary, junior high and high school students three days a week, three hours each day. The Learning Center is staffed with highly qualified teachers and is designed to increase student achievement. Students experience a safe and drug-free environment.

In addition to tutoring services, the Learning Center works with students to help them organize time and improve study skills and test-taking skills. Students have the opportunity to participate in field trips, career exploration and college preparation.

The Orton-Gillingham method of instruction is also available at the Dayton Success site. Orton-Gillingham helps students suffering from dyslexia but has also been found to be beneficial to all learners, especially those struggling in reading and spelling. For more information about the Dayton Success Site or Orton-Gillingham, contact stacey.whittaker@vcslearn.org.

SES Tutoring

In accordance with No Child Left Behind, VCS students may be eligible to receive extra help in reading and mathematics outside of their logged school hours. Eligible students include those who are economically disadvantaged, as determined by the income form completed at the time of enrollment, and are at-risk of failure, as determined by test scores and grades. Families who may be eligible for services are encouraged to apply. Chosen families then select a free (state approved) tutoring program that is best for their children. For more information on SES tutoring, contact Sherry Kuehnle or Linda Lineback at visiting.teachers@vcslearn.org.

Fall and Spring Picnic

Twice a year, VCS holds a school-wide picnic. Once in the fall and then again in the spring, students, families and faculty members gather for an afternoon of fun activities, social interaction and delicious refreshments. In the past, picnic participants have enjoyed a 50-foot climbing wall, an inflatable bounce house, a Spanish lesson as well as, games of kickball, tag and hide-and-go seek! In the spring, prize baskets are also raffled off to a few lucky winners! For more information on an upcoming picnic, contact jill.workman@vcslearn.org. Field Trips

In the past, students have visited places such as the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the U.S. Air Force Museum, the Scioto Audubon Park plus many more! Watch for upcoming announcements for more information.

Graduation

At VCS, you can choose to participate in as little or as many social activities as you wish. But there is one event that you do not want to miss… high school graduation! Students work hard for four years, completing their required credits and passing their OGT’s. These hard working students are honored at the VCS Graduation Ceremony. Families, friends, faculty members and board members are all invited to watch graduates walk across the stage, accept their diplomas and begin the journey into their very bright futures. Students will get the opportunity to meet teachers, principals, fellow classmates and get professional photos taken. For information on the VCS graduation ceremony, contact nancy.lee@vcslearn.org.
