A message from our superintendent…
Welcome to a new school year and to our new website!
You’ll see some great information including news on our students’ successes, information on events and contests, updates on our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) activities and even a place for our past graduates to connect with us. Now more than ever, we want our image and legacy to be what our name suggests, Community!
Members support, promote and protect one another in a community. We may be virtual in nature, but our goal is to offer those same community benefits to both our students and our teachers. Supporting these ideals is what will truly enable us to fulfill our mission of ‘making a difference in the life of a student.’
Last year was a year of growth as we challenged ourselves to improve in many areas. We moved to a more-rigorous curriculum, we changed our technology deployment and support structure and we grew our part-time enrollment and digital academy installations across the state… All good things.
Our teachers also improved in their ability to reach-out, inspire and engage students in the learning process. When surveyed, 93 to 97% of our parents and students gave our teachers top marks in class and course organization, responsiveness, providing clear and meaningful feedback, and trying multiple ways to reach-out and answer questions or clarify material. Thank you, VCS instructors, for challenging yourselves and going the extra mile for our students!
However, it’s our students’ performance we are most proud of. Last year VCS students, grades 3-11, increased their combined scores on standardized reading tests by 22% overall! ACT scores of our 2014 seniors met or beat the state average in both Math (Algebra I/II and Geometry) and in Science (General Science, Biology, Chemistry), and EXCEEDED the state average in English Composition and Social Science. Many of them are off now pursuing post-secondary opportunities. We wish them the very best of luck!
We expect another great year and will be working hard to build the kind of educational environment in which all of our students can be successful.
Let’s make this a GREAT school year!
